From the blurb: "Language
Links combines grammar, vocabulary and phrases to give the range of
language you need to communicate effectively in English. To talk about
money, for example, you not only need vocabulary (credit card, bill,
receipt),
but also verb forms (I paid, I bought, It cost) and phrases such as
Can you lend me...? Can we have the bill? Special links between units direct you to related
language areas, allowing you to choose your own learning path through
the book and progress at your own pace."
If you
liked
Language Links Elementary - Beginner-Elementary,
then you'll love Language Links Pre-Intermediate!
The principle of the two
books is exactly the same, so read the other review for more information
on that.
As you might imagine,
this one bumps the level up a bit, with slightly denser text and more
complex grammar points, moving into present perfect and passive
territory, for example. Likewise, some of the vocabulary topics become
abstract, with titles like 'Moving things', 'Disasters and emergencies'
and 'Communicating'.
The index is again very
complete and is complemented by verb tables for the new tenses covered
and seven 2-page reference units dealing briefly with phrasal verbs,
modal verbs, ing forms and
so on.
Again,
the whole thing is on CDs, two this time to cover the 100 units (up from
80), and again there are the useful links on every page to other
relevant sections in the book, allowing you to 'surf' around to your
heart's desire.
Thanks again to the
books clear layout and refreshing mixture of vocabulary, grammar points
and useful key phrases, I shall certainly be using this one with my own
students, both for homework and during lessons, to help them practise
the specific points, which nicely complement many standard student
books.
An underrated book which
might be just the excuse you're looking for to finally excape from Red
Murphy's golden cage!
